In the End Only …….. Matters!! Seven Lifehacks to Cultivate Kindness

hugh anthony, certified lifestyle speaker · author · lifestyle coach

Are we living in a world where kindness and having a sense of duty to care for others doesn’t come naturally anymore? Or is kindness or the expression of it being left to the third sector (non-profit or charitable organizations) to fill the void? The world needs more people who are willing to make a difference, one individual at a time.  Individuals who are willing to ‘pay it forward’ or ‘send the ladder back down‘ when they have experienced success or better yet, show kindness along the journey.

“Do all the good you can, by all means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

John Wesley

Of interest, I believe that ‘charity begins at home’ and it is important that we learn how to show kindness and do good not just to self or the people we interact with – family, friends and colleagues.  But notably, to that random individual who needs help, a listening ear and even a smile (without judgment or ridicule) in our communities. I have often asked the question to my audiences or clients ‘what happened between childhood and adulthood?’  Have life experiences robbed you of the ability to continue doing good and show kindness to others without being skeptical or moreso cynical? A simple gesture such as offering to grab a coffee or a meal for someone, or simply enquire, how’s your day? Spending time volunteering at a soup kitchen, helping out at a homework club, an after-school program, running errands and hear stories of our mature citizens can make a world of difference to individuals.

“No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted.”

Aesop

The words of Jewel Kilch from her song ‘Hands’…. “in the end only kindness matters” resonates, they are profound and impactful words.  The line from her song reinforces powerful words for us to live by and for humanity. Unapologetically, I agree, because I have been living an amazing life, not because I worked hard or smarter. It is because of the kindness I have experienced and acknowledged along my journey and how it helped me to be an even better human being. I have been enriched, educated and enlightened in my travels where I have had the opportunity to serve by sharing and showing kindness, and vice versa. Having had the opportunity to visit numerous countries and resided in some that have high social capital, I have learnt and witnessed that people get an emotional boost as highlighted by researchers Tom Rath and Jim Harter that doing kind things for other people; and that donating time and money can have a bigger return on wellbeing than spending it on material goods.  In their Gallup poll, they found that people with higher well-being are more likely to give back to their communities — whether it be their time, money, or help to strangers — and this relationship is true as well for …. well-being. The experiences to collaborate with individuals and organizations making a difference both locally and internationally has fostered a heightened sense of empathy, increased altrusim, positive social behviour, gratitude and mindfulness.

“We can’t practice compassion with other people, if we can’t treat ourselves kindly.

Brenee Brown

Here are seven life hacks from my interactions and sojourns that can get you started, so you can leave your mark on humanity with one thing that matters in the end… kindness!!

  1. Start with being grateful, gentle and kind with self.
  2. Reflect on the choices you make for self; and for and with the people in your everyday life – personal, professional and social.
  3. Be conscious of your thoughts of self, others and your reactions toward people.
  4. Choose kindness over judgment by finding opportunities to impact change to make a real difference – volunteer or partner for a cause.
  5. Begin actively making attempts during your day to choose to be kind to those around you.
  6. By radiating positive energy you can help those around you [a smile or showing appreciation] can affect all those around you and effect change.
  7.  Start a reflective journal on how choosing kindness is making a difference in your life and the lives of others.

“There’s no doubt that humility and acts of kindness are important—not just for entrepreneurs, but for life in general.”

Suren Dutia

There have been numerous individuals, who took the time to show kindness, mentored, coached or shared a compliment whether professionally, voluntarily, randomly or personally… they have all made the journey immensely better  – Thank You!! For those, that I will meet along the way…I am excited and grateful for the kindness you are going to show me.  To you, thank you for reading this post…it is my hope to provoke candor and thought….our humanity matters.

Here is an excerpt from ‘Hand’ for your reading and the link for your listening pleasure….remember…” in the end only kindness matters.”

Excerpt from Hand by Jewel

We will fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what’s right
Cause where there’s a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing

My hands are small, I know,
But they’re not yours they are my own
But they’re not yours they are my own
And I am never broken

In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters

In your own small way, your expression of kindness paves the pathway to the promise of a better tomorrow. Kindness does help to galvanize hope and open unknown doors to opportunities.  When we learn selfless and unselfish giving – kindness – it underscores our sense of duty and understanding to humanity that ‘service is the rent we pay for living.’
