Is there a greater gift you can give than leisure time? Is there any more important present to bestow upon yourself and the person you love than the chance to make quality time to see and experience the world, to enjoy new experiences, to interact with friends [current and new] to have their life irrevocably altered through the act of leisure time and the adventure of experience?
Are you making time for self and others to experience the beauty that is alive around you? Have you had the chance to meditate to sound of nature’s beauty, share a cup of coffee, a meal or sent a thank you card to show your appreciation? Or did you treat yourself to an ice-cream, a trip to the local market [for art & craft | fruits | antique shopping] or a trip to the art gallery, a musical, a concert, a play, the movies or a spa weekend? Or better yet, supporting a local initiative [entrepreneurial or lifestyle] in your community or travel to help make a difference?

In a study conducted by both the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School and the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management; the researchers found that “there’s been a growing body of work that suggests that from a happiness perspective, a good way to spend your money is buying experiences rather than material goods. Research finds that people are much happier and that happiness is lasting when treating themselves to a nice dinner or going on vacation or going to a concert, rather than buying the latest electronic or a piece of jewelry. That is something for everyone to keep in mind when they’re purchasing for themselves.”
The gift of experience and quality leisure time allows you to bask or relish in the moment. One of the reasons that giving yourself, others and even your clients the gift of leisure experiences, it is better because you always have that memory or help create memories [life moments] for others they can remember for long time to come.
In his article, The Power of Curiosity Tosh Kashdan cites that one of the keys to happiness is cultivating and exercising our innate curiosity. Experience is the fuel to satisfy our curiosity because it brings us more happiness than possessions do. Furthermore, curiosity helps us as human beings by bringing our minds to a state of active interest or genuinely wanting to know more about something. It creates an openness to unfamiliar experiences, laying the groundwork for greater opportunities to experience discovery, joy, and delight.
The experiences of leisure and lifestyle moments are powerful than you can ever imagine. The journal Psychological Science underscored the importance of spending money on experiences because it “provide[s] more enduring happiness.” The anticipation of an experience act as a driver of happiness and the key benefit is instantaneous, given that spending money on experience creates eustress and excitement to accrue before the actual event happens.
There are tons of reasons and more to make time for the gift of experience. It is one of the greatest things we can give ourselves and others. Life at the end of the day is a tapestry of our experiences and a mosaic of our memories. For all that life has to offer, memories matter and so do you.
